At the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, U.S. lawmakers asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken about President Joe Biden’s stance on the Taiwan issue.

According to the South China Morning Post, Blinken replied that the administration is “determined to make sure that [Taiwan] has all necessary means to defend itself against any potential aggression, including unilateral action by China, to disrupt the status quo that’s been in place now for many decades”.

He added, “We’re focused on helping them think about how to strengthen asymmetric capabilities … as a deterrent.”

As CNA reported, Blinken also mentioned the key role of Taiwan’s semiconductors to the world. He said the Biden administration understands the stakes and is taking steps to address it.

He noted that the U.S. has a major technological advantage over China in complex chipmaking. The U.S. is also working with Taiwan, Japan, and the Netherlands to prevent China from acquiring high-end chip producing capacity.
